All Blacks partner Air New Zealand predicted Bledisloe win with full-page SMH ad

Air New Zealand threw itself into the Bledisloe Cup fight, backing the New Zealand All Blacks with a taunting full-page ad in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday.

Titled ‘Dear 17-year-old Australians, on behalf of all New Zealand’ the ad lists a number of things that 17-year-olds have seen in their lifetime, including drones, podcasts and planking, before ending with a promise that an Australian Bledisloe win wouldn’t be on the cards.

The last time the Australian Wallabies won the annual Bledisloe cup was in 2002, with New Zealand taking the crown every year since. The ad, which came from Host/Havas, correctly predicted another win in 2019, with New Zealand sealing the deal Saturday night.

In 2019, the Bledisloe Cup was reduced from the usual three games to two in preparation for the Rugby World Cup, and despite Australia’s win in game one, New Zealand’s victory in game two meant the cup returned to the reigning champions and will stay on New Zealand soil.

Using the hashtag #CrazyAboutRugby, Air New Zealand matched its SMH ad with a Twitter post which appeared after the game and congratulated the Wallabies on their performance before finishing with a mention of the Rugby World Cup.

2019 saw Air New Zealand celebrate its 20th year of partnership with the New Zealand All Blacks, which has seen the All Blacks star in several Air New Zealand safety videos.
