Amazon, Bunnings and Microsoft websites see visits surge in Q4 2020

In the final quarter of 2020 online giant Amazon was the most visited retail website, with an additional 55 million visits in for Q4 compared to the same period in 2019 according to Semrush data.

This represents a 75% increase for year-on-year reporting period, spurred by spike in visits during October following the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales weekend. Coming in second spot was Bunnings Warehouse, with an increase in traffic of 26 million visits for Q4 2020 compared to 2019.

Rounding the top 10 retail websites for the quarter were Kmart, Woolworths, JB Hi-Fi, Microsoft, Big W, Oz Bargain, Coles and Officeworks.

Tech giant Microsoft saw the biggest increase in visits for the quarter with a 77% jump in web traffic year–on-year for Q4, however, this was a decrease of more than 4.9 million visits compared to the COVID lockdown period in Q2.

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen Microsoft’s revenues surge as a result of PC sales, growing demand for video game, and increased use of its cloud services. The company reported a 17% increase in quarterly revenue, to $US43.1 billion in Q4 2020.

Across the top 50 websites that Semruch tracks, the total number of website visits was greatest in July 2020, followed by March 2020. Both those months were higher than any of the months in Q4, showing a strong online shopping trend during COVID.

Post tax time, cashed-up households splash out on home items and tech with Amazon, Bunnings, Woolies and Kmart the top websites visited for the month of July.

For jB Hi-Fi, the fourth quarter bought an increase of more than 10 million visitors quarter-on-quarter with a number of clothing retailers also seeing strong increases as well.

Myer had 10.5 million visits, almost double David Jones (6 million) during November, and was the best performing fashion store, with 3 million more visits than The Iconic during November.
