Australian production Picnic at Hanging Rock to run on Amazon Prime Video

Picnic at Hanging Rock will run on Amazon Prime Video US, producers FremantleMedia International announced yesterday.

Based on the novel by Joan Lindsay and the ground breaking 1970s Australian movie, Picnic at Hanging Rock tells the story of three schoolgirls and one teacher from Appleyard College who go missing on Valentine’s Day in 1900.

The series will air on Foxtel in Australia in 2018.

Unlike the movie, the FremantleMedia Australia production follows the investigation and the impact on students, family and staff involved.

The FremantleMedia Australia production also received investment from Screen Australia and is being shot in Victoria, with assistance from Film Victoria. The production has seen a number of personnel changes with current producer Brett Popplewell replacing Ewan Burnett in April who stepped into the role after Antonia Barnard quit at the beginning of the year.

Commenting on the deal, Caroline Kusser, senior vice president, sales and distribution for FremantleMedia International in North America, said the “stylish re-imagining” of the novel will capture contemporary audiences in the US.

“With fantastic scripts, outstanding cast and bold editorial direction from Larysa Kondracki, Picnic at Hanging Rock is set to be a must-see series in 2018. We are thrilled to be working with Amazon Prime Video to bring this powerful drama to US screens.”

Picnic at Hanging Rock will premiere on Foxtel in Australia next year.
