American Sniper retains box office top spot as Paper Planes holds strong
American Sniper continued it’s lead in the top spot over the weekend with newcomer The Theory of Everything followed in second place as cinema attendance dropped off with the school holiday period coming to an end.
Sniper, which details the life of a Navy SEAL sniper and stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, took $3,414,956 bringing it’s total ticket sale takings to $11,468,250.
The Theory of Everything, a biopic about the life of academic Stephen Hawking starring Eddie Redmayne, came in second with $1,370,016 across 241 screens.
In third place was Aussie kids movie Paper Planes starring Sam Worthington which took $871,305 for a total take of $7,157,063.
Fourth was was World War 2 drama The Imitation Game which over the weekend collected $848,938 for a total of $15,461,098.
In fifth place was jock comedy The Wedding Ringer which managed $641,852 for a total of $2,118,124.

Roadshow should have released Paper Planes a week earlier to fully capitalise on Aussie school holidays- I think it cost them a bit of coin as a result. It would’ve gone up against Taken 3 & Into The Woods – not too bad. I understand not going two weeks earlier and trying to take on the Penguins.
