An unstoppable Joker adds another $4.4m to its box office total, beats Maleficent and Zombieland sequels
Joker has shown no signs of stopping for its third week in the box office, adding another $4.35m to its running total of $28.5m, despite new releases for the weekend including Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Zombieland: Double Tap.
Maleficent took $2.52m across 467 screens and Zombieland $1.94 across 289. Joker screened across 443 screens.
Angelina Jolie returns as the titular anti-hero in the second Maleficent film, joined by returning cast Elle Fanning and Sam Riley and new additions Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michelle Pfeiffer. The film sees Fanning’s Aurora agree to marry Prince Phillip, before a feud between his family and Maleficent leads to a war between them and the Dark Feys.
All the main characters return for Zombieland: Double Tap also, with Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin and Emma Stone all reprising their roles from the first film, joined by Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch and Luke Wilson. The film picks up a few years after the first left off and follows them battling more zombies and finding new survivors.
Hustlers and Gemini Man, which both took on Joker last week and lost, brought in $1.61m and $540,251 respectively across 316 and 263 screens for their second weeks out. Ride Like a Girl, which is in its fourth week, took $744,093 across 284 screens.
Judy, which also debuted this week, took $501,824 across just 60 screens. The Universal film stars Renée Zellweger and is a biopic about Judy Garland in the late 60s, shortly before her death in 1969. Zellweger has been praised for her role in the film, directed by Rupert Goold, while critics have said the piece focuses primarily on the tragedy of Garland’s life and not the triumph.
Downton Abbey, also distributed by Universal, sat in eight position for its sixth week out with $283,114 across 240 screens, followed by Abominable with $252,266 across 222 and The Angry Birds Movie 2 with $142,815 across 204.
