Annabelle: Creation takes top spot from Dunkirk at weekend box office

It its first weekend at the Australian box office, David Sandberg’s thriller, Annabelle: Creation, climbed to the top of the ladder, earning $2.287m across 231 screens.

The Warner Bros prequel to the 2014 film Annabelle, and fourth instalment of The Conjuring series, tells the story of a former toy maker and his wife, who welcome a nun and six orphaned girls to their farmhouse, before they are all terrorised by Annabelle, a possessed doll.

Annabelle: Creation managed to defeat Dunkirk, which earned $1.728m across 337 screens over the weekend.

According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report, the film has earned just short of $19m since its debut in late July.

In third place was Valerian and the City of a Thousands Planets – a sci-fi film which features two special operatives who must work together to maintain order through human territories.

Premiering on August 10, the film made $1.259m on its first weekend at box office.

Fox’s War For The Planet Of The Apes fell from second to fourth place over the weekend, managing $1.055m. It has made $8.867m since its launch.

Fifth was Universal’s thriller Atomic Blonde, which made $900,996 in its first weekend at box office.
