Apparently Julia Gillard is a redhead
Most powerful Julia Gillard front page so far? How about the Illawarra Mercury’s?:

Awesome design work, but the ‘burning penguins’ headline at the top is a tad unfortunate given the theme (even if it blends in with the idea on one level).

Wow – I wonder what was on page 8?

@ Heath
I suspect an advert, of course….

Is it ironic or just unsavoury that the top line reads “Penguins burnt to death” above a cover which is symbolic of matches?

Nobody at the Mercury caught the Redhead matches/burning penguins link? Really?

Well, at least it wouldn’t have been a Mining Industry advert on p8.

Bloody great work!
Did you hear her comment to Kerry O’Brien last night about redheads?

Typical “style over content” cover, utilizing dimwit monkeys who love Wolfmother but don’t know the name of Robert Plant (hello, Gen Y) that can abuse a wacom tablet but cannot actually DRAW.

I love this front page – graphic and marketing genius.
For us oldies, it connects the comfortable heritage of the matchbox that we’ve known for a lifetime, Australian irreverence, and cutting those tall poppies right down to size with the younger people’s nexus with brand Australia.
This will definitely feature on Gruen Transfer this wk, I thought Illawarra Mercury was conservative? Out of the mouths of babes…
Brilliant, funny and unforgetable.

Hi I am the art director at the Illawarra Mercury. Just some feedback about how the cover was created.
Firstly the concept belonged to the head photographer here, Kirk Gilmour, who is not only a great photographer but an awesome news hound.
I started creating the initial front page going from a photo of Gillard. The photo idea didn’t work well as the Redhead graphic is more stylized.
When the night artist came to work (Rob Coombs – who is an extremely talented illustrator with over 35 years experience in the newspaper industry) he sketched Julia’s features, going from some photos, and then scanned in his drawing going over it in photoshop with the pen tool (No Wacom tablet used and he CAN actually draw – GenYsux).

Perhaps you are looking at this from a design point of view, then kudos. However the whole redhead matchbox icon had a great sexual conotation applied to it over the years. Because of this, I think this artwork entirely inappropriate. If Julia were koori, would you put her in a tribal dress aka Hans Heysen? I think not. Let’s try to be a tad more ingenious and positive about our new PM, bring it into 21stC.

GenYsux – you got served!
And serves you right, too! you baby-boomber dickhead!

That illustration is the absolute pits!
it doesn’t look at all like her and it is a very ugly design.
I can’t beieve that guy is a professional.
No wonder he works for the Illawarra Mercury

Mercury, you may think you’re creative and maybe that is true. but your irresponsible. could you stop focussing on physical/genetic attributes and just get to the point – the job she is or isn’t doing?
have a look at this group on facebook:

and read the links on the “discrimination awareness” discussion thread.
i don’t think you’ve portrayed her negatively but you’ve surely perpetuated a negative issue which is inflamed enough. stop adding fuel to a fire which needs to be put out by the media, not further inflamed. you obviously have no awareness of how this issue burns out of control and is largely unnoticed by the masses. your ignorance is irresponsible. i’m sure your artistic team have other ways they can prove their artistic prowess. it’s your job to set a better example for the ignorant masses. if she were indigenous australian would you paint her naked, give her clap sticks and a dij and put a traditional skirt on her? wake up! no of course you wouldn’t because her heritage is IRRELEVANT and so is her physical and genetic attributes.
