Apple’s TV streaming service will launch in November and be cheaper than Disney, Netflix and Stan

Australia’s streaming landscape is set to get a little bit more congested with Apple releasing the details of Apple TV+. The new streaming platform will cost Australians $7.99 per month, undercutting Disney+, Netflix and Stan.

The platform will launch with exclusive content including The Morning Show, fronted by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, and See starring Jason Momoa. It will launch on 1 November, 18 days before Disney+ lands.

Apple TV+ will be cheaper than most other streaming platforms in Australia, but its content offering is limited

Apple will offer a seven-day free trial for consumers, far lower the 30-day trial many other subscription services offer, but it is giving buyers of an iPhone, iPad or Mac a free year of streaming. The platform will be up and running across 100 countries in November, compared to Disney+ which launches in three countries before rolling out across Australia and New Zealand a week later.

The family sharing feature will allow up to six users to share on Apple TV+ subscription – a feature which is also available on Stan and Netflix at an increased membership cost.

The platform will launch with just nine original programs, compared to over 500 feature films and 7,500 show episodes for Disney+, but it promises a new original every month, including productions with M. Night Shyamalan, Octavia Spencer, Aaron Paul and Oprah Winfrey. Some programs will launch with three episodes, with a new one added each week, while others will launch with complete series. The Verge is reporting Apple is pouring US$5bn into content creation for its platform. That’s compared to a reported US$15bn from Netflix.

Users will be able to watch Apple TV+ on the Apple TV app which comes pre-installed on all Apple devices, is available on Samsung smart TVs and will be available on Amazon Fire TV, LG, Roku, Sony and Vizio platforms in the future. The content can also be watched on Amazon’s TV website, where viewers can already watch trailers and queue content on the app in preparation for the launch.

Apple TV+ joins Apple Arcade, the company’s video game subscription service which features over 100 new and exclusive games, Apple News+ and Apple Music. Apple also offers Apple Pay and Apple Card – leading to suggestions the tech giant could begin offering bundles of its services at a discounted rate.

The Apple TV+ announcement was made at the company’s 2019 keynote event, which also saw it announce Apple Watch Series five with an always-on retina display, built-in compass and international emergency calling, a new iPad, the dual-camera iPhone 11 and the triple camera iPhone 11 Pro. Notably missing were any further announcements about Apple News+ which has received a lukewarm reaction in the US.
