Aquaman pulls $11m in earnings on first weekend at box office

New DC Comics film Aquaman achieved $11m in earnings on its first outing at the weekend box office.

The film stars Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman, and since its premiere on Boxing Day, the film has made $15.667m.

It ran across 632 screens on the weekend. Overseas, Aquaman has made more than US$750m (AU$1.063b).

Animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, which stars former Hit Network radio host, Hamish Blake, alongside John Reilly, Sarah Silverman and Jack McBrayer, achieved $4.908m over 527 movie screens, coming in behind Aquman. The film comes six years after the first – Wreck-it Ralph – and also premiered on Boxing Day.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2, made more money than the sixth instalment of the Transformer film series, Bumblebee. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg and John Ortiz, as is a prequel to the 2007 film Transformers. It made $2.012m across 203 screens, bringing the film’s total earnings to $6.849m. It premiered on December 20.

Also new to the weekend box office was mystery Holmes & Watson, which sees Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson join forces to investigate a murder at Buckingham Palace. Starring Will Ferrell and Reilly, the film first ran on Boxing Day, and pulled $1.837m on its first weekend at box office, across 322 screens.

Meanwhile, Bohemian Rhapsody hit more than $40m in earnings over the weekend, thanks to an additional $2.012m over 203 screens.
