As Coles drops collectibles, Woolies releases 80% recycled Bricks

Woolworths has released its new collectibles, ‘Woolworths Bricks’, Lego-style building brick playsets which are made from at least 80% recycled material.

The news comes just a month after Woolworths’ competitor, Coles, committed to no longer giving away any plastic collectibles.

Woolworths newest collectible, Woolworths Bricks

All of the Woolworths Bricks are made from at least 80% recycled material. Most of the bricks are made with 100% recycled materials, only some pieces have 20% plastic added to increase the strength or transparency.

Woolworths Bricks have been certified by Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) which is, according to its website, a “not-for-profit multi-sector ecolabelling program and advisory”. The certification means that GECA has found that the bricks meet environmental, human health and social impact criteria.

Woolworths has also renewed its partnership with TerraCycle ANZ, which allows for the bricks to be recycled by dropping them off at any Woolworths. Additionally, the FSC wrappers can be recycled through local council curb side recycling, dependant on local council regulations.

Woolworths chief marketing officer Andrew Hicks said: “As Today’s Fresh Food People we are committed to making changes for a better tomorrow. Through our latest collectible we’re taking customers on this journey with us by showcasing in a playful and creative way how we’re growing greener, not only in how we operate our business, but through the programs we engage with them on.

“Woolworths Bricks is a fun and interactive way of learning at home that can spark conversations within families about sustainability; whether that’s how materials like plastic or refrigerators can be given a second life, or how solar panels and electric car chargers are making a positive impact on the environment at their local Woolies.”

Woolworths dropped a sustainability campaign the same day as Coles did, featuring its plan to be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2025.

TerraCycle ANZ general manager, Jean Bailliard, said: “We’re pleased to partner with Woolworths to provide a recycling solution for their Woolworths Bricks collection. Our first of its kind recycling program can use materials like pre-loved Woolworths Bricks to make new products for the community such as park benches and garden beds, supporting our mission to move from a linear economy to a circular one.”

For every $30 spent, Woolworths Bricks allows for customers to build a replica of a Woolworths Supermarket featuring things such as solar panels and Free Fruit For Kids baskets. The kits will be available through all shopping methods, including in-store and delivery.

There are a total of 40 Woolworths Bricks packs will be available to collect. Customers can also purchase two starter kits, with the choice of a Basic kit for $6 and a Deluxe kit for $10.

Woolworths Bricks are also compatible with other brick playing sets.

The collection will be made available in stores and online in the coming weeks.
