ABC hunts for new marketing chief

The ABC has begun the search for a new marketing leader, just months after appointing former Droga5 chief strategist Milla McPhee as its director of audiences.

The national broadcaster is recruiting a head of marketing who will report to McPhee and lead the development of a refreshed marketing strategy across the organisation.

The position has been held by Rebecca Robertson in a contractual capacity since August 2024, following Karen Madden’s temporary move to lead the audiences division.

Both executives have agency and media backgrounds: Robertson from Howatson+Co and Madden from Nine.

The ABC did not respond to Mumbrella’s request for comment on the recruitment process or the status of its current marketing leadership.

According to the ABC’s job listing, the incoming marketing head will be responsible for “modernis[ing]” the broadcaster’s marketing practice through “insight and technology”, while building a culture of measurement and accountability. The role is described as combining “strategic insight, creative excellence and marketing innovation.”

McPhee’s audience team has also grown with the appointment of Kyle Hugall, another former Accenture Song and Droga5 strategist, to lead the ABC’s in-house creative agency, ABC Made.

At the same time, the ABC dismantled its ‘social strategy’ team within ABC Audiences, spreading its responsibilities across the strategy, marketing, and screen divisions.
