Asahi appoints Julian Sheezel as group GM of corporate affairs, following acquisition of CUB

Carlton & United Breweries’ (CUB) VP of corporate affairs, Julian Sheezel, has been appointed group general manager of corporate affairs for Asahi, following its acquisition of CUB earlier this month.

The deal between Asahi and CUB was first agreed to in July 2019, but was delayed due to concerns from the ACCC about the share of the beer and cider market the deal would give the Japanese brewer.

In April, the ACCC announced it would not oppose the deal following Asahi’s divestment of the Strongbow, Bonamy’s and Little Green cider brands and the Stella Artois and Beck’s beer brands.  The acquisition went through at the start of June.

Sheezel’s new role follows Asahi’s acquisition of CUB

Sheezel joined CUB in 2017 as its corporate affairs director and was elevated to his former role at the start of 2019.

In his new role, Sheezel will oversee the corporate affairs for Asahi Lifestyle Beverages, Asahi Premium Beverages, Asahi Beverages NZ and Carlton & United Breweries.

In a statement to Mumbrella, Sheezel said it was an exciting and pivotal time to be stepping into the new role with Asahi.

“It’s very exciting to have joined Asahi Beverages at such a pivotal time. That excitement though is tempered by what our teams and customers are going through in dealing with COVID-19,” Sheezel said.

“What could be more energising than working for Australia’s leading drinks company? Carlton & United Breweries and Asahi Beverages coming together is going to make a major and positive impact on the Australian drinks market.”

Sheezel outlined his priorities in the role during this challenging period in history.

“With Asahi Beverages’ agility, and our commitment to invest for the long-term in Australia, I’m particularly looking forward to working on our sustainability program. But our first priority is delivering on our programs to deal with COVID-19 and help our customers get back on their feet,” he said.

“In leading Asahi’s Corporate Affairs program I’m also looking forward to working with our industry partners and stakeholders to represent the interests of the business and industry more broadly.”
