Australian films raise funds in Nepal

KennyThe Australian Embassy in Nepal will host its Australian Film Roadshow in Kathmandu, to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and Nepal and raise funds for the Tilganga Eye Centre.

Ambassador Susan Grace recommended Kenny, Chopper and Rabbit Proof Fence to Nepalese audiences, who will be offered only a selection of mostly late 1990s and early 2000s films.

The most recent feature to play at the event will be 2006’s Kenny. Other features include Rabbit Proof Fence, Chopper, Bootmen, Mullet, Mallboy, Love Serenade and Two Hands.

Adam Elliott’s Oscar-winning short Harvie Krumpet will also screen, with other shorts such as Birthday Boy, Cracker Bag, Footnote, Mother Tongue and Warwick Thornton’s Green Bush.

The embassy in Nepal has issued a press release to the local media, which directs readers to the defunct Australian Film Commission’s website for more information about the Australian film industry.

Fortunately, www.afc.gov.au has been re-directed to the current site of its predecessor Screen Australia, but perhaps Australian embassies around the world should be briefed about changes in the industry to help them inform and educate their host countries on Australian culture.

The mini-festival will take place from February 19-28 at the Russian Culture Centre.
