Australian TV viewers chose bed over cricket crushing

TV viewers turned away from the cricket on Sunday night rather than watch Australia being trounced by England in The Ashes.

Just 355,000 tuned into the first session on Gem – nearly 50 per cent down on last Sunday’s 679,000 for the final day of the much closer first test.

Last night saw Australia beaten by an embarrassing 347 runs with a day to spare.

Just 246,000 tuned in for the second session – compared to 558,000 last Sunday – a drop of nearly 60 per cent.

On the main channels, Nine’s The Block was top show with a capital city audience of 1.548m, according to overnight ratings from OzTAM. it was just ahead of 60 Minutes, which rated 1.547m.

Seven’s drama A Place To Call Home rated 1.293m, while ABC1’s drama The Time Of Our Lives rated 693,000.

Ten’s only contender was Masterchef, which rated 773,000 – 14th for the night in all people and ninth in 25-54.
