Australia’s mostly harmless, and totally immaterial, contribution to Pandora
Ever since reading how Planet Earth is “mostly harmless” in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Dr Mumbo has often mused his inconsequential place in the universe.
No doubt some of Pandora’s now discontinued Australian staff will be sharing that feeling after Karen Walker, Pandora Media’s chief accounting officer described the local operations’ contribution to the company’s operations as “not material”.
To add insult to injury, Pandora’s interim CEO Naveen Chopra pointed out at yesterday’s investor briefing that the Aussie operation only represented 1% of the platform’s listening hours. “It is not a particularly large market,” he said.
Once again a reminder that despite how glamorous being the local manager for a multinational tech platform appears, branch office executives are little more than befuddled Arthur Dents in the scheme of greater things.
Even though he may be immaterial to the international giant, Dr Mumbo still misses Pandora – who else knew how to build the perfect playlist out his secret love for Demi Lovato?
Something perhaps we should all consider as we enjoy a nice cup of tea and ponder on our immaterial lives.
Sorry, you miss me Mumbrella, try this! x

I used to love sitting in media agency pitches hearing Pandora being flogged to us clients, and then watching uncomfortable people squirming in seats when educated clients threw back informed numbers about Pandora at them.
Account Managers stumbling over words on why Pandora was the future and Spotify etc was not.
