Back Roads most watched non-news program as ABC performs well on a quiet Monday night

The ABC’s Backroads program, in which host by Heather Ewart travels to regional communities, has led a low ratings evening for the second week in succession, as the most watched non-news program of Monday night.

The show led what was a strong night for the public broadcaster drawing 742,000 metropolitan viewers at 8pm, while Stephen McDonell’s Foreign Correspondent episode at 8.30pm on his decade in China drew 624,000 to win its timeslot and help the ABC to a 13.9 main channel audience share.

Over on the commercial networks a repeat of The Embassy on Nine at 7.30pm drew 590,000 beating Seven’s Better Homes & Gardens’s Christmas special which had 565,000. 

At 8.30pm movie Robin Hood on Seven drew 457,000 viewers while Marshalls drew 344,000.

Ten’s highest rating program of the night was The Project which had 534,000 at 7pm while a repeat of Modern Family drew 439,000.

In the news race, Seven won the night solidly pulling 941,000 across the 6pm and 6.30pm bulletins on the eve of the Sydney Siege anniversary while Nine had 888,000 in the 6pm bulletin and 866,000 in the 6.30pm slot.

The Simpsons on Fox8 were the highest rating program on subscription television with 90,000 viewers.

In main channel audience Seven won the night with 19 per cent, Nine had 17.5 per cent and Ten had 10.3 per cent.
