Bauer Media digital boss Carl Hammerschmidt departs

Bauer Media digital head Carl Hammerschmidt is set to depart in what is the first major move at the magazine publisher following the arrival of new CEO Nick Chan two weeks ago.

Carl Hammerschimdt Mumbrella can reveal that Hammerschmidt is departing after six years with the publisher where he led the creation of the Australian division of Bauer’s digital offering Xcel over the past 18 months.

Nick Chan, CEO of Bauer Media said, in a statement: “I would like to thank Carl for his dedication and hard work in pioneering Bauer Xcel Media in Australia.

Chan: “Hammerschmidt laid the foundations for (Bauer’s) continued success and evolution”

“He has laid the foundations for its continued success and evolution,” said Chan. “I understand his desire to move on to the next phase of his career and I wish him the very best in his future endeavours. I’m pleased Carl has agreed to work with the business over the next few months to ensure a smooth transition.”

Many Bauer insiders are anticipating additional changes to the senior ranks in the weeks and months ahead. The company declined to comment on what effect Hammerschmidt’s departure will have on the future of Xcel as a separate division.

“It has been a fantastic six years at Bauer,” said Hammerschmidt. “It has been a pleasure to lead the team of passionate and dedicated people who have all contributed to the birth and development of a successful digital business.”

“The digital business has gone from strength to strength and there is a great platform for continued growth. It is now time to move on to the next opportunity. I would like to thank Bauer for giving me the opportunity to build this dynamic and exciting business.”

Back in April, Xcel announced further “structural changes” in the business, culling five positions, with Hammerschmidt saying, at the time, that the roles were cut as the company shifts from a “delivery phase” to an “operational phase”.

In an email to staff Chan said it was Hammerschmidt’s decision to leave:

Dear Colleagues

After six and a half years with Bauer Media and ACP Magazines, Carl Hammerschmidt, general manager of Bauer Xcel has decided to leave the business.

Since joining the company, Carl has been instrumental in building Bauer digital platforms and launching Bauer Xcel Media. Over the past three years he has driven the Bauer digital business forward, including the acquisition of Beauty Heaven, as well as overseeing the creation of the largest online network for women, with The Australian Women’s Weekly, Woman’s Day, COSMOPOLITAN and new brands such as Food to Love and Homes to Love. During his tenure he has delivered both significant audience and revenue growth.

I want to thank Carl for his service to the company and his hard work pioneering our digital journey.  We wish him well.

I’m pleased to say he will be available to us for a few more months to ensure a smooth transition.

We will advise of a replacement in due course.

Regards

Nick Chan
