Ben Shepherd to depart CHE Proximity

CHE Proximity is set to lose its chief media officer, with Ben Shepherd tendering his resignation last week.

Shepherd joined CHE Proximity in May last year at a time it was expanding its capabilities to pursue CEO Chris Howatson’s consultancy-style approach to the agency.

Shepherd is on the move 

When Shepherd came on board, Howatson had taken on an expanded remit, absorbing responsibility for all of Clemenger Group’s agencies, including Clemenger BBDO and Marketforce.

Shepherd was charged with leading CHE Proximity’s media practice, and noted at the time of his appointment that the landscape had become needlessly complicated.

“Media in general is much more complex than it needs to be,” he said. “CHE Proximity’s pure focus on client outcomes is aligned with my personal values and we will continue to build upon this model of complete transparency in order for our efforts to be completely focused as an organisation at making our clients’ brands more valuable.

“The ability to lead a practice into its next evolution, free of an incumbency or legacy practices or ways of working, is incredibly liberating and exciting.”

Mumbrella understands Shepherd has a 12-week notice period. He has not yet responded to requests for comment or provided information about his next move.

Howatson, however, praised Shepherd’s short time with the company and what he achieved.

“We’re very grateful for the contribution Ben has made to CHEP over the last 12 months,” he said. “He is one of the smartest media minds in the country and has applied his talent to help us achieve a fully integrated, best in breed, media practice. He is also recognised for the support and leadership he offers the wider industry. His articles are revered for their insight and widely followed. During COVID, his efforts in running an industry-wide 12-week education program helped the entire media community.

“We wish him the very best and are thankful for the team he has built and the excellent work they do for our clients every day.”

Prior to his time with CHE, Shepherd was a director of PwC’s CMO Advisory. He’s also been OMD’s head of strategy and innovation.
