Betoota Daily News secures highest debut on latest Aus Podcast Ranker

The Betoota Daily News Bulletin, a podcast produced by the team behind popular satirical news website The Betoota Advocate, is the highest debutant on the January edition of the Australian Podcast Ranker.

The podcast lands at #27 as the ranker, released by Triton Digital in collaboration with Commercial Radio Australia (CRA), includes Betoota’s independent publisher Diamantina Media DM for the first time.

Diamantina Media podcasts are published via its partnership with Australian Radio Network’s iHeartPodcast Network Australia, with other podcasts to debut from the publisher including Chat 10 Looks 3 with Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb (#52), and fellow Betoota offering the Betoota Advocate podcast.

The addition of Diamantina follows fellow independent publisher Podshape joining the ranker in December.

CRA chief executive Joan Warner said: “DM has a stable of well-known and successful Australian podcasts and it’s great to have their results reflected in the ranker for the first time.”

Betoota’s Clancy Overell added: “Reading the writing written on the wall by our online team, we at The Betoota Advocate moved into the world of podcasts after being told quite a few people listen to them. Hoping to replicate the success we had by moving the paper onto the internet, our newsroom seeks to bring people an unbiased regional take on stories that matter to them.

“So, now we send out our honest, independent news in audio form, through our Daily News Bulletin, as well as weekly and longer format conversation shows.”

Looking at the Top 15 podcast on the ranker, iHeartPodcast Network’s Stuff You Should Know remains the #1 most downloaded podcast, while The Kyle & Jackie O show is the top radio-catch up podcast as it returns to the Top 5.

Nova Entertainment’s decision to re-launch its news podcast as a twice-daily offering, The Update, has paid dividends. The podcast jumps six places to #6, cracking the Top 10 and taking the spot of #1 Australian daily news podcast.

Other podcasts to debut on the latest ranker are Nova’s It’s A Lot with Abbie Chatfield and Wondery’s The Minds of Madness – True Crime Stories.

One of the biggest movers this ranker is ARN/iHeartMedia’s She’s On The Money, which moves up to #7, making it the #1 business podcast in Australia. The podcast is hosted by Victoria Devine and KIIS 101.1 presenter Ryan Jon.

The All-Australian Podcast Ranker sees the Betoota Daily News Bulletin debut at #17, and once again topped by Audioboom’s Casefile True Crime.

The Marty Sheargold Show – Triple M Melbourne (SCA), and On Guard – Stories From Inside Australia’s Toughest Prisons (News Corp Australia), also debut.

Despite the addition of several new podcasts, total reported downloads were down on December, falling from 46.2 million to 40.2 million during the January reporting peeriod.

Meanwhile ARN’s iHeartPodcast Network Australia continues to be the #1 podcast publisher in Australia on the ranker.

ARN head of digital audio, Corey Layton, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many of iHeartPodcast’s titles consistently holding the top positions on the ranker.

“It’s an exciting time as we continue to increase the scale of our offering to support the best creators, give our audiences more of the content they love and provide integrate brands with shows that resonate.”
