Big news players miss out on AIMIA shortlist
Almost all of Australia’s biggest commercial news sites have failed to make it onto the shortlist for this year’s AIMIA Awards which was announced this afternoon.
The news, media and reference category sees four ABC offerings shortlisted, along with a feed of Twitter PR discussions created by BCM, consumer group Choice’s site, news aggregator Wotnews and Bigpond’s sport offering. The only work from the main commercial news players both come from News Ltd – news.com.au’s federal election site and Adelaide Now.
The full list of AIMIA 177 finalists across 23 categories can be found here. Winners will be announced at an event on Cockatoo Island in Sydney on March 18
My understanding is AIMIA awards are restricted to those who have nominated themselves (ie not everyone). So maybe the news sites who ‘missed out’ didn’t enter.

Another awards season!
Notice in the judging criteria there is actually no area that actually looks at the key thing clients should be interested in and that is SUCCESS. Or to put it bluntly the Return On Investment.
Doing a quick scan through the candidates, there are a few campaigns/sites listed and known that have not performed should they have been executed with a keen eye for performance.
Nothing about click-thru rates, conversion rates, cost of acquisition, net revenue earned, whether expressed in $$ or %. We are after all active in the most accountable and measurable comms channel…… isn’t that what our own PR tells us?

Thanks, generalissimo, I’d better point out that the AIMIA Awards are not an advertising or marketing industry awards program, it’s all about creative and technical innovation in digital irrespective of whether the entry is about advertising, information, training, whatever. We’re closer to the Webby Awards in the US than anything else in this respect.
However you’ll note that we do have a couple of advertising categories and a specfic effectiveness category to cater for exactly what you’re asking about – ie; ROI, Sales, Registrations, Click-throughs, conversions, redemptions, user-sessions, entries, traffic increase, leads, referrals etc.

Astounding that BigPond Sport gets a nomination. It’s a miracle of nature that sites from BigPond Media’s stable consistently get nominated (and awarded) at this farce.
Clearly this year Telstra decided it was time to promote their mediocre sport brand by gifting it an award, rather than its AFL.com.au (previous multiple winner, despite the dozens of reasons against.)
The panel who nominated BP sport would’ve been among an audience of hundreds that day, rather than thousands. If the whole panel logged-on at once, it would probably have shown up as an anomaly in Nielsen… They certianly wouldn’t have been seeking breaking sports news…
