The Block: Triple Threat wins the night as Downton Abbey audience plummets on return
Simulcasting on all three of its channels saw Network Ten’s reality show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here lift on last week, but was not enough to lift it past Nine’s The Block: Triple Threat which won the night in the absence of My Kitchen Rules on Seven.
Nine’s reality show got its best audience of its run so far with 1.114m viewers, up from last week’s audience of 982,000, helping the channel win the night with an audience share of 23.1 per cent.
However, Seven saw a large drop on the return of British period drama Downton Abbey, with 772,000 viewers tuning in last night at 9pm, compared to 1.125m for the return of the last series last year. The current series has already aired in the UK, and is also available to buy on iTunes in Australia.
The Block, which posted its best audience to date and was the most-watched show across all the demographics, out-rated Seven’s My France with Manu which pulled an audience of 945,000 at 7pm, according to preliminary overnight metro figures from OzTam.
Seven managed an audience share of 20.6 per cent as Ten claimed a share of 14 per cent and the ABC settled for a share of 13.1 per cent. However, in terms of total audience share Seven won the night with a total share of 30.5 per cent as Nine managed a total share of 29.7 per cent.
On Ten, according to the preliminary figures, 756,000 metro viewers tuned in to see former Hi-5 performer Lauren Brant kicked out of the jungle on Ten’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here at 6.30pm while 660,000 metro viewers watched the rest of the show.
The eviction was up on last week’s eviction audience of 736,000 while the rest of the show also saw its audience lift from last week’s 627,000 viewers as it was simulcast across both Eleven and One last night.
Shark Tank in the 8pm timeslot grabbed a metro audience of 739,000, up on last week’s audience of 688,000.
It was out-rated by Nine’s 60 Minutes which was watched by 830,000 metro viewers in the 8pm timeslot.
Meanwhile on Seven, the second outing of heavily promoted new series Australia: The Story of Us saw its audience grow to 945,000 in the 8pm timeslot after grabbing a metro audience of 876,000 last week.
On the ABC, David Attenborough’s Conquest of the Skies was watched by 682,000 at 7.30pm, Broadchurch at 8.30pm was watched by 672,000 and Fortitude at 9.30pm was watched by 429,000.
In time-shifted viewing, last week’s final episode of The House of Hancock was watched by an extra 260,000 viewers, taking the show’s total audience to 1.684m.

HELLO!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Channel 7!?!?!?!?!?!
Starting a new series of a show AFTER the whole season has already aired overseas is a prime example of why pirating exists. It amazes me that they think that all will be fine with airing it so long after its available.
We will take a week and hey, maybe even 2 weeks after it has aired and stay loyal to you but this is just taking the mickey.
Can’t wait for them to come out and point at this result and blame Australians for pirating.

Wow, ratings are tanking across the board again this year – TV really is on it’s last legs – finding it’s new place in the media landscape – which is apparently on its knees.

This season of Downton is actually better than the last.
I bought the dvd from Amazon UK last year and it’s been circulating for nearly 6 months among family and friends.
I doubt I am the only fan who has already watched the entire season legally and quite cheaply.

Totally, Lady Muck and Mumbs.
Seven has this idea that the audience for this show skews older and that this market doesn’t pirate or order online etc.
Well, my 69 year old mother has already watched the season on her iPad, and my aunt got it from Amazon last year and watched on her laptop.

Bad programming error by Seven re Downton Abbey. As everyone has pointed out, not only is the series stale, but to put it on at 9pm on a Sunday just gives competitors – who put their best stuff up in the 730-830 slot – a free kick.

I have just turned off Downton, as I think it lost its spark with the killing off of Mathew

Apart from the lag in Downton appearing on Australian TVs, Channel 7 also didn’t promote it. I didn’t know it was on until my Mum sent me a text message last night saying so.

@Debra Too true, zero marketing, “mumtexts” are the new digital marketing 🙂
As everyone above has stated, too late 7, seen it.

Disappointing for Downton fans…. Come on Channel 7, you’ve done the same with Scandal which has almost finished airing season 4 in the US whilst I still cant purchase season 3 in Australia. I don’t want to pirate but you give me every reason to.

Even so, if you do buy it from your iTune Australian account , you can only download the episode after it has been aired here. To rub the salt into a wound you have paid up front and won’t get your money back. This is clearly a case of the nasty big corporates scratching each other on the back.
