Blue wins at Cannes
Directed by Stephen Kang and produced by Tara Riddell, New Zealand’s Blue was named 50th Semaine De La Critique Grand Prix Canal + Du Meilleur Court Metrage Best Short Film.
The story is about a big blue alien and children’s TV mascot who loses his job and struggles to make ends meet working in an Asian restaurant.
The 32 year-old director and graduate from Elam School of Fine Arts told New Zealand’s 3News, “I was very surprised and very honoured, especially given that this year is the 50th anniversary of Critics Week. It’s amazing, I didn’t expect to win with such big competition. The win was totally out of the blue.”
Kang’s feature Desert, is currently in cinemas throughout New Zealand.
