Jason Bourne debuts with $7.6m as Star Trek sales drop hugely

The debut of the fifth instalment of the Bourne series, Jason Bourne, shot in at the top of the weekend box office after raking in $7.695m in ticket sales.

The film, which sees Matt Damon reprise the role of the superspy betrayed by the US government, played on 554 screens.

It blitzed second placed Star Trek Beyond, which managed $1.7m in its second week in the cinema on 403 screens, with total takings of just $7.01m so far.

A surprise in third place was the special event Andre Rieu’s 2016 Maastricht Concert which played at Event Cinemas and managed a whopping $1.45m, beating blockbuster Ghostbusters which took $1.3m and Lights Out which followed with $812,822.

Finding Dory continues to hang around the top 10 with a weekend take of $476,753 on 229 screens giving it a total box office so far of $47.6m.
