Box Office: Deadpool & Wolverine beats new M. Night Shyamalan thriller

The combined might of Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has managed to hold onto the top spot at the Australian box office for a second week in a row – despite a new M. Night Shyamalan thriller opening over the weekend.

Deadpool & Wolverine brought in $12.7 million this week, bringing its total Australian takings past $37.5 million in just two weeks.

The previous weekend, the Marvel film enjoyed the highest-grossing opening since Barbie, and the biggest opening of the year, taking in $17.6 million at the Australian box office across its Thursday-Sunday opening weekend, taking $19.9 million including preview screenings.

According to HOYTS, it was the highest-grossing opening weekend for an MA15+ film of all time, the 10th highest-grossing opening weekend of all time in Australia and the fourth-highest MCU opening weekend of all time behind Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Deadpool & Wolverine backed this up with the fourth-highest second weekend of all time, behind Barbie, Avengers: Endgame, and Top Gun: Maverick.

Second by a long stretch was the M. Night Shyamalan thriller, Trap, which stars Josh Hartnett, and which brought in $952,000, ahead of Twisters which brought in $835,000, taking its total cume to $10.8 million.

Inside Out 2, the biggest Pixar film and the highest-grossing animated film of all time, added another $706,000 to move past $53.2 million.

Despicable Me 4 rounded out the week, with another $683,000 bringing its tally to $40.9 million.
