Bridge of Spies tops new releases but can’t topple The Martian at the box office

Bridge of Spies was the highest new entrant in the box office this weekend holding off the new Paranormal Activity film, but could still only manage the second best takings of the weekend with $1.76m on 300 screens.

The Cold War drama which stars Tom Hanks could not match the runaway success of The Martian, which once again dominated proceedings with a take of $2.2m on 510 screens taking its earnings up to $20.9m.

Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension, the sixth and final instalment of the series, took $1.339m on 330 screens, while Bradley Cooper’s chef flick Burnt which managed $875,801 on 246 screens.

In terms of local cinema Oddball pushed its takings above $10m with the family film taking $222,000 on 209 screens, while Alex & Eve, about a Greek Orthodox schoolteacher who falls in love with a Lebanese Muslim lawyer, took $88,385 on 32 screens.
