The Briefcase audience drops by a third on second outing

Audiences switched off from Channel Nine’s ‘poverty porn’ show The Briefcase in droves last night, with the show dropping from 733,000 viewers on debut last Monday to 491,000.

The poor performance – down 34% – also appeared to have a knock-on effect for returning Nine drama, Love Child, which could manage just 698,000 viewers at 8:30pm, according to OzTAM overnight metro ratings. Last year its second season debuted to 817,000 viewers.

Heston Blumenthal proved a strong drawcard again for Masterchef, with Ten’s cooking show grabbing 1.1m viewers from 7:30pm, beating Seven’s House Rules, which had 1.051m, and The Briefcase.

That translated into stronger ratings for Have You Been Paying Attention which managed 830,000 at 8:40pm, up on 773,000 last week.

Those shows helped Ten tie for audience share with Nine, at 17% each, while Seven won the night with 20.2% and the ABC achieved 15.4%.

ABC’s top show was Australian Story which saw 787,000 viewers tune in for the story of farmer Pat Murphy, and Media Watch, which attracted 636,000.

Nine News was the top show overall with 1.164m viewers at 6:00pm and 1.101m at 6:30pm, while Seven had 1.149m at 6:00pm and 1.061m at 6:30pm.
