Brisbane launches screen program

Brisbane City Council and Brisbane Marketing have launched Film Brisbane, an initiative to promote the Queensland capital as a screen production destination and differentiate it from the Gold Coast.

“We need to differentiate ourselves from the Gold Coast because we have a lot to offer. We don’t have the Warner Roadshow studios and we wouldn’t try to emulate them, but we have studios that attract TVC and smaller productions,” program manager Katherine Cooke told Encore.

“We will be working together with the Gold Coast, to make south east Queensland the premier destination for production. We have a lot of similarities and we’re both film-friendly councils, but there are points of difference; they generally attract large feature films, but we have locations, crew and facilities and locations that producers  might not be aware of,” added Cooke.

Film Brisbane is already in operation, but the official launch will take place later in the year, with the presentation of a new website offering a searchable location directory, as well as a local crew and services listing.

Brisbane was recently featured in Daybreakers and the Warner Bros. production Fool’s Gold, as well as a number of international TVCs. The city wants to position itself as a destination for production, post-production, VFX, interactive, gaming, animation and online content.

“Brisbane has a lot to offer and we’d like to see more productions choose to pre, shoot and post here. As the Film Brisbane program manager I am available to help facilitate the best local crew, locations, equipment and suppliers for productions. I have a background in production so they get to speak with someone who truly understands their requirements,” explained Cooke, who works closely with the Filming Liaison Officers at the Council and with Screen Queensland.
