Bundaberg Five: not for poseurs, dandies or boybands
Tom Kuntz has directed an ad for Bundaberg in which a man’s experience in a dull bar is transformed after he chooses Bundy’s new white rum, Bundaberg Five.

The agency behind the campaign was Leo Burnett Sydney.
Bundaberg Rum marketing manager Matt Bruhn said: “The ad depicts a young man in a typically boring bar, with tired décor and dull people sucking down bland drinks. He is about to conform, and order a bland drink, when the barman (a magical fellow in a white tux) intervenes, and takes him on a musical journey through a world filled with players, gold, fountains and a camel – the character‐filled world of Bundaberg Five.”
The 90‐second spot will be followed by a 60‐second version, and online, print and outdoor work.
Large scale production. Absurdist theme. Big white room filled with bizarre epic props. Lots of oddball people.
It’s Hahn Superdry, except for Bundaberg Five.
Hopefully no-one else has briefed Kuntz on a booze job in Australia. I suspect three commercials shot the same way might start getting a little weird.

Leo’s love their 90 second TV spots. Weird format choice given the target market for these sorts of booze products, the cost of TV to reach them and their usage of alternative channels.
Like the ad. Feels like Hahn but that’s Kuntz’s way.

After it finished, YouTube suggested I watch a video about Ted Bundy. Google is smart.

LOVE IT!! I’m going to order this at my next bar visit. I hope I meet the camel and those sexy african american soul loing ladies too!

How old do you have to be to be in an alcohol ad?
The guy at the beginning looks like a boy?

90 second spot only needs to run once to meet its primary objective. We all know that.

Wow, it’s the Ugly Man Bar! This is obviously not located in Sydney or the door bitch would have turned them away… And is it just me or does the guy with the drink look exactly like Michael Cera in a dodgy wig?

Bruhny, it’s pure ridiculous, hilarious engaging gold! If I was a drinking man I’d be all over it. I do however take issue with your pomposity in referring to ‘a magical fellow in a white tux’, surely ‘a creepy dude in a white tux’…

It’s engaging alright, but it leaves me uncertain about the brand.
I’m not sure how people are supposed to feel about drinking the product.

I’d have been lost without the excellent desciption of the scenario by the brand manager. Top job!

Is it supposed to be a Bacardi that blokes can order?

It’s a train-crash. There’s no brand in it until it’s too late – you’ve changed channels because you don’t want to look at these offensively ugly people.
Astonishingly, there’s not one redeeming quality to this ad.
Diageo has some soul searching to do., especially regarding who approved such ineffective indulgence and whether their roles are still tenable.

Instead of the Conchords, i think they should be giving R Kelly some props:

Also set in a bar and the music is far too similar.

Is the ad aimed at homosexuals? The man in white invites the boring young guy to a magical world which seems to originate from between his legs.

Up there with one of the worst ads ever in my books. Was still trying to work out the product it was trying to sell after a cringeworthy 90sec of rubbish. I can tell it’s Bundy at the end but Bundy what?
Agree with @BB – bring back the bear.
