Canva hires ex-journo Jonathan Harley as lead for media and newsrooms

Design and publishing platform Canva has appointed Jonathan Harley as its lead for media and newsrooms.

Harley has previously held senior journalism and producing positions at the ABC and Nine. He joins Canva from Twitter where he was most recently director of news partnerships for Asia-Pacific.

Harley previously held roles at the ABC, Nine and Twitter.

Harley has been appointed to leverage his knowledge of media businesses and visual storytelling to develop Canva’s new initiative to support media outlets with its latest technology.

In addition, joining Canva’s PR team is Mitch Holmes. Holmes will be focused on bolstering Canva’s global product and customer storytelling.

Holmes joins after seven months as a senior account manager at BCW. Previously he was an account manager at Red Havas.

Holmes has also spent time at Three Monkeys Zeno in London and Golin Harris.

Also joining the PR team is Lachlan Andrews as PR coordinator. He joins from the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta, where he held the roles including technical support officer, digital communications director and media and communications officer.

Liz McKenzie, Canva head of PR and communications, said: “A hyper-growth company like Canva requires a PR and Comms team that’s nimble enough to keep the world informed about our exciting new developments. We have a design community representing 190 countries, yet we still have a long way to go to bring the power of design to even more people. Our newly expanded PR team will help evangelise Canva far and wide, and inspire more people to achieve their crazy big goals through great design.”
