Carlton Draught releases an ‘Ode to the Pub’ ahead of venues reopening

Carlton Draught has released an ‘Ode to the Pub’, pleading with Prime Minister Scott Morrison to announce a date when pubs can reopen in Australia.

Set to the tune of REO Speedwagon’s ‘Can’t Fight this Feeling’, the song covers a number of struggles of isolating at home, including being forced to make Tik Toks with your children, drink gin and tonics with your wife and the NBN dropping out again.

The song was written by Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and Carlton & United Breweries’ (CUB) in-house team CUB House executing the production and social media.

The song has been posted across Carlton Draught’s social media and directs Australians to show support for their local pub via CUB website Love Of Your Local. There, people will be able to buy a pint of CUB beer with the funds going directly to their nominated local venue.

CUB is matching the support, pint for pint.

Carlton Draught brand manager, Stephen McWilliams, said: “As the opening lyrics of the song go, it’s been 60 days but it feels so much longer. Beer drinkers across the country were all waiting for the moment they were allowed back in the pub, and this song perfectly captured the mood of the nation.”

Clemenger BBDO Melbourne creative director, Ant Phillips, added: “Keeping away from friends, family and loved ones hasn’t been easy. But no-one could’ve prepared us for the anguish of staying away from the pub. Hopefully this song excited Australians about their locals re-opening and has helped drive traffic back to those pubs who have been doing it tough.”

In the lead up to Christmas last year, Carlton Dry, another CUB brand released its own version of the carol ‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year’, recounting all of the shenanigans encountered at Christmas.

The campaign was created by Special Group, which is also on CUB’s roster of creative agencies.
