Cartoon Network looking for local project

The Screen Producers Association of Australia and Cartoon Network will launch Snaptoons (Short New Asia Pacific Cartoons) Australia, a local version of the children’s pay TV original content development initiative.

Producers will be able to pitch ideas for a project targeting 5 to 12-year-olds, for the chance to win a $15,000 grant towards development of a pilot. Content should be delivered from an animated perspective; concepts can be drawn from animation or live action, across both short and long-form offerings.

The top 10 will be invited to pitch to executives at the SPAA conference, with judges including Turner executives Michael Carrington, chief content officer EMEA, Robi Stanton, executive director, Australia and New Zealand and Rick Fernandes, executive director for original production. Fernandes said they’re expecting concepts that reflect “the irreverent, innovative, cutting-edge style that our networks are renowned for”.

Two proposals will receive $5,000 from Cartoon Network to develop their show bible. One of them will then win the $15,000 grant.

Snaptoons was launched in Asia in 2006. The original Snaptoons in India chose 10 scripts that were made into 7 to 10-minute pilots.

The guidelines and application forms for the Australian edition are available at www.spaa.org.au/conference.

The SPAA Conference will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney, November 16-19.
