Cellarmaster Wines fined for email spam
Government authority the Australian Communications and Media Authority has fined wine distributer Cellarmaster Wines Pty Limited $110,000 for email spamming consumers.
The spam in question included more than 3000 emails that were sent between May and July last year that did not include unsubscribe details along with promotions for Cellarmaster Wines’ online website.
“This is simply a case where a business has failed to take sufficient care in managing its Spam Act responsibilities,” said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman.
“As a result, Cellarmaster Wines has found itself in hot water, not only with the ACMA but with its customers,” he added.
The Spam Act requires that all marketing emails are sent only with the consent of the recipient and provide an opportunity for recipients to opt out of receiving further marketing messages.
Their email spam is one thing – their phone spam is even worse.
Late last year they were chasing me on the mobile and range over 50 times in a month. Never left a message and when i spoke to them they blamed the computer system.
I cancelled my delivery.

Wow – that’s a pretty stiff fine.
I am always amazed that companies still fuck up like this.
I was flabbgergasted that Optus got fined $5 million for their misleading ad as well as it was clearly crossing the line.

Cellarmasters are relentless, non stop calls to my mobile (like Craig), emails and DM offers to my workplace. I am not surprised at this article, I had to have stern words with them to stop all contact, permanently, which worked for a few months and then early this month they sent me a $25 “welcome back” gift card out of the blue. A very poor consumer experience. Avoid.
