Channel 7 axes Adam Cooney in AFL shakeup

Former Western Bulldogs star Adam Cooney has revealed on-air that Channel 7 has axed the popular AFL talk show Armchair Experts, the latest in the network’s talent shake-up.

Cooney, the host of the star alongside commentator Cam Luke, revealed the news on Tuesday morning on his SEN Breakfast radio show, calling it a “sad day.”

“Who would’ve thought that show wouldn’t run forever?” he joked.

“It is a sad day. The Armchair Experts are no more. Seven years. We started on digital – we started out on Twitter, and eventually we got to broadcast.”

This comes after a series of high-profile announcers defected from Nine to Seven, including the entire Footy Classified team, Kane Cornes, Nick Riewoldt, Caroline Wilson, and the show’s host and producer Craig Hutchison, who rejoins Seven in 2025, after 18 years. to host

Hutchison will host Seven’s upcoming AFL talk show, The Agenda Setters, which will air on Monday and Tuesday nights, as well as produce a lot of Seven’s AFL content through his Rainmaker company.

Interestingly, Cooney noted on air that Hutchison — who is CEO of SEN — and Cornes, who hosts a show on the radio network, had effectively cost him his role at Seven.

“I’m just a victim of some of my colleagues here coming in and taking the cash,” he said. “Hutchy puts a little bit of tucker on my table, but then he’s taken a bit off.”

Of Cornes he said: “He’s just taking everyone’s jobs. He comes over here and he’s taken our jobs. Go back to where you came from, Kane.”

Seven Network director of sport, Chris Jones, confirmed the news to Mumbrella.

“Over six AFL seasons, Armchair Experts grew from a weekly Twitter-exclusive show, to a mainstay on Seven and 7plus following the Friday Night Footy broadcast,” Jones said.

“That growth would not have been possible without our vibrant team of hosts including Cam Luke, Adam Cooney, Kate McCarthy, Tommy Sheridan and previously, Georgie Parker, and we thank them all for their energy and passion in bringing the show to life.

“With expanded AFL digital rights and further programming opportunities on Seven and 7plus in 2025, we are working closely with our group of Armchair Experts hosts for potential collaborations in the future and we look forward to sharing more details in the new year.”
