Chaser gap sees ABC ratings fall

The absence of The Chaser from the Wednesday TV schedule cost the ABC some of its prime time audience last night.

On what has traditionally been the network’s strongest day of the week, the ABC ended up with a 17.3% share of free to air metro homes, according to preliminary data from OzTam. This was down more than 2% on a fortnight before (last week was not a typical week because of State of Origin).

Seven was the winner with a 28.6% share for the night and a 1.5m audience for Thank God You’re Here.

Nine had a strong evening too, although the Gordon Ramsay effect wasn’t enough to propel A Current Affair to a second victory over Today Tonight.

And Ten’s only performer was MasterChef, which pulled in a 1.5m audience before the rest of the night’s schedule sank almost without trace.

Last night’s share: Seven 28.6%; Nine 27.2%; Ten 22.8%; ABC 17.3%; SBS 4.2%.

Meanwhile, the Socceroos’ victory lap World Cup qualifier with Bahrain pulled in Fox Sports 1 one a respectable peak audience of 346,000.

Wednesday’s top rating shows:

  1. Seven News – Seven 1.7m
  2. Thank God You’re Here – Seven 1.5m
  3. Masterchef – Ten 1.5m
  4. Today Tonight – Seven 1.4m
  5. Spicks and Specks – ABC 1.4m
  6. Nine News – Nine 1.4m
  7. RPA – Nine 1.4m
  8. A Current Affair – Nine 1.4m
