Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar tops weekend box office as Fury is pushed to third place

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar has pushed Fury off the top of the Australian weekend box office taking in $4.191m across 548 screens in its opening weekend, with Gone Girl continuing to hold onto its second place.

Gone Girl pulled in $1.072m across 325 screens, taking its total Australian box office takings to $23.517m, beating Brad Pitt’s Fury which managed $1.012m across 302 screens. The film has made a total of $7.191m at the local box office.

John Wick was pushed into fourth place after seeing its box office takings tumble from $1.092m last weekend to just $617,179 across 177 screens this weekend.

Love, Rosie was also a newcomer to the top five, taking in $497,175 across 159 screens in its opening weekend.

Pride, which tells the true story of how UK gay activists worked to help miners during their lengthy strike of the National Union of Mineworks in the summer of 1984, pulled $455,670 across 145 screens taking its total Aussie takings to $1.291m.

This Is Where I Leave You settled for eighth place in the box office rankings after taking in $197,148 across 196 screens. The Tina Fey and Jason Bateman movie has made $2.182m locally to date.
