CNN invites Sydneysiders to vote on holiday activities of a Hong Kong tourist
CNN is launching a regional campaign to promote its travel and lifestyle website CNNGo Sydney.
The campaign centres on a competition that allows locals and CNN viewers across Asia to choose – via the website – the holiday activities of the “intrepid, yet indecisive, traveller” Alex during her trip to Sydney.
“I have no idea what I’m doing, so my trip is in the power of your hands,” she says.
The promotion runs through until July 15 with prizes to be won for those who help Alex, such as Sydney Swans VIP tickets, limo transfer, club tour, post-match party and a signed jersey.
Alex will blog about her experience after each day’s activities.
Users can also vote via CNNGo’s Facebook page and Twitter account.
Better than Tourism Australia…

Why do I care about this bird then, or what she does while here?

Yawn.
So CNN saw that the BBC bought Lonely Planet and decided to create this schlock.
Time Out must also be very, very flattered at the copied and pasted editorial style.
This dreary competition will only take off (if ever) when the challenge choice becomes a bit more “Fear Factor” ie:
Spend a night at Penrith Panthers Spend a night at Stonewall.
The prizes are also very, very dull.
16 votes at 11am on the first day is unlikely to improve meteorically unless this promo gets some wow factor.

Dreary site – is this user generated content or paid for?
I love the way they are putting people off coming to Sydney by putting a massive picture of a shark that appears to be looking at a surfer and Bondi beach.
And she doesn’t want the “usual” tourist experience but they put a picture of Bondi? Yawn.

Who is this mystery ‘AdGrunt’?
Why does he comment on every Mumbrella story?
He certainly has a point of view on everything.
He must be very clever.
I think AdGrunt should start up his own blog!

Just another Facebook vote competition…

Oh please, now they’re advertising this to Sydneysiders on Facebook and as I write still only 70 votes.
This is a very odd site and I don’t understand what CNN are doing;
1) No ads. There are no ads on the site, just CNN house ads. (Ok I just saw one but the sales team must be asleep)
2) Why are they targetting Sydneysiders with this competition? – a Hong Kong resident on holiday who doesn’t want to do the normal tourist thing but who goes to the Swans and then Bondi surfing. Dull!?
This should be targeted at Hong Kong residents, not us. This is a travel competiton – not in the know things for locals – that’s why the response is so poor.
3) The content of this site is so confused – what is the point? What is the USP? Why even bother? It’s like a travel blog for teenagers from nowhere in particular – perhaps random articles written for SEO?
Sorry Alex / CNNGo, I challenge you to fly home early through the ash to re-evaluate your expensive but poorly conceived promotion.
