Status Quo return for Coles Christmas party with Curtis Stone and Cathy Freeman
Coles has launched its Christmas TV campaign featuring brand ambassadors Curtis Stone and Cathy Freeman – and the return of Brit rock band Status Quo.
In the ad, the Quo play at a Coles Christmas party, with the trademark Coles ‘Down, down’ red hands taking the shape of their guitars.
Status Quo first appeared in a Coles ad in July, and have since toured Australia backed by Coles.
The Christmas campaign was by Big Red, Ted Horton’s agency.
Hello little bit of vomit in mouth! I’m sure it will work though. The All Star line up of what has been a great year of marketing. I may not love it, but it’s been damn effective.

I guess it’s a gig for the Quo boys…but oh jeepers how embarrassing for everyone
involved…

Not sure there is anything there that says anything but Merry Christmas. A bit too busy for me. Not sure what they are trying to acheive here.

Tat is classic. The punters will love it.
I cannot mute those ads fast enough. Their only redeeming feature is that they must appeal to morons.
I even avoid their retail space nowadays after being subjected to “the song” at high volume one day.

Ted must be laughing all the way to the bank with this crap. He’s even re-using the ‘do you think Australians will find this annoying?’ line from the previous Quo ad in there again. Money for old rope indeed!

The music in this is catchy. I think the consumer insight is bang on. The production values are great. If I didn’t know that Droga5 had Woolworths I would have sworn they had made this. It is very good and will hit a human chord. Particularly at christmas time!

@ I think you guys are being a bit harsh:
I am trying to work out if you are being sarcastic, but I’ll assume for the time being that you aren’t…
What consumer insight are you talking about exactly when you say “bang on”?
It’s nothing more than a mashup of every Coles ad from 2012. I’m not saying it won’t work, but let’s be honest, there is no “human truth” or planning genius behind Coles’ success over the last couple of years – it’s just simple & effective retail advertising.
I imagine Big Red’s strategy for “Down, Down” looked something like this:
Problem – Coles is perceived as being more expensive than Woolworths
Insight – People like cheap groceries
Solution – Let’s create a mnemonic retail device that inextricably links Coles to low prices
It’s not rocket science, but it works.
One final point, Big Red and the “Down Down” campaign is the absolute antithesis of what D5 stands for in the ad marketplace. There is no chance D5 would ever produce work like this. And there is no chance the Big Red would produce work like the current Woolworths campaign.

At 0:25 there appears to be a snail being placed on top of the cooked salmon. Surely not?

I’m not sure if you work for Droga5 or not however I’m not sure if they would agree entirely. They are known for their planning insights and creative work which can be found on the website droga5.com.au
This is a great example of catchy work based of a strong insight. It’s great to see these two retail giants competing on a level like this.
It’s all great work and it’s really hard to tell who’s going to win this one!

@ Hey really….
What “strong insight” are you referring to?

I find this annoying – however I’m not the target. The masses organising Christmas will eat it up.

All of you need to take your heads out of your arses and have a good look around.
Look at sales. Look at marketshare. Look at the feeble, turgid efforts droga are pulling out for woolies.
Just take a second to realise its not us ad w@nkers that represent australian shoppers.
For god’s sake. It’s fun. It’s happy. It’s Christmas. It’s Coles.
Good work Ted. Good work Coles. I know your tills will be ringing!

I am an every day bloke with a wife and really do have 2.2 kids. I’m English and I even went to a concert where Status Quo Supported Queen at Wembly stadium.
I hate this ad with a passion. It has Managed to drive me past coles to aldi and subsequently on to IGA for the stuff the nice germans at Aldi don’t have. All because of how annoying this ad and the big red hands are. Almost as bad is that CA CHING crap. Why can’t we do retail advertising in Australia!!

Hi Ratsrepus… I think I was at that concert too. Were you the over-excited Status Quo fan sitting behind me?
Cheers,
