Coles goes down down with finger ridin’ chicken

Coles ChickenColes has plumbed new depths with its Down Down campaign, flogging chicken with an excruciatingly ill-fitting version of the Dean Martin classic ‘That’s Amore’ sung by a butcher and a very bad backing band.

The ad by Coles agency Big Red highlights the supermarket’s cheap chicken while mangling the classic with lines such as: “If you love your chook, here’s where to look, it’s a down down”.

Highlights include a fortunately unidentifiable person in a chicken suit meandering randomly through the ad before cutting to a shot in a field showing the chicken riding the Coles big red hand like it’s a bucking bronco.

Coles’ latest effort comes as M&C Saatchi begins to make its mark with rival Woolworths, with ads from the newly-appointed agency now entering rotation on TV.

Early work by the agency is heavily specials-focused, with Woolies launching an ad in recent days promoting the ‘Big Night In’ with chocolate and chips specials.

The campaign also highlights a sports promotion being run by the supermarket, with checkout operators at the end of the ads wearing sports equipment such as NFL helmets and racing helmets.
