Craig Herbert to step up as mX editor

Daily Telegraph assistant editor Craig Herbert is to take the helm of free daily commuter title mX Sydney while editor Melissa Stevens is on maternity leave.

The announcment:

News Limited’s editorial director Mr Campbell Reid today announced the appointment of Craig Herbert as editor of mX Sydney.

Mr Herbert will cover the role from November 1 when current editor Melissa Stevens takes maternity leave.

Ms Stevens took the helm at mX in July 2008. Since then she has built circulation and readership and improved the content and design of the newspaper significantly. Melissa will return to the role in 2011.

Craig joined the company as a copyboy in 1983 on The Daily Sun in Brisbane, became a cadet in 1985 and subsequently covered a variety of reporting rounds including police, courts, sport and general news.

Moving to Sydney in January, 1989, Craig joined The Daily Mirror and reported on a wide range of the city’s biggest stories at the time including the Granny Killer, the fall of Premier Nick Greiner and the Victor Chang murder.

Craig later joined the subbing desk before moving into editorial production and design of The Daily Telegraph front page and news pages as layout editor.

In his most recent role as The Daily Telegraph’s assistant editor, Craig has managed day-to-day marketing and promotion of the paper’s content and editorial talent to external media, as well as managing the links to pre-press and Chullora as production editor.

Mr Herbert said: “mX struck an immediate chord with Sydney commuters when it was launched five years ago and now has a strong, daily following among more than 100,000 train, ferry and bus commuters in Sydney every day”.

“My role is to continue the successful trends established by Melissa and lead mX through its next phase of growth and development,” he said.
