Creative agencies make LinkedIn Top Startups list

Creative agencies have made the seventh annual LinkedIn Top Startups list, which ranks the emerging companies people most want to work at, based on LinkedIn data.

Howatson+Company was the highest-ranked agency in adland, and the only one in the top ten – sitting at tenth in the list.

The full-service agency boasts 121 full-time employees, with the most common job titles at the company being ‘creative director’, ‘copywriter’, ‘vice president design’ and ‘user experience designer.’ According to LinkedIn, the agency has “recorded rapid growth since it was founded in 2021 and is now considered a mid-sized firm.”

Founder Chris Howatson left his role as CHEP CEO in February 2021 to start his own agency, with a number of high-profile industry signings. Earlier this month the company announced former CHEP Network COO Andrew Drougas would head up its Melbourne office as managing director.

Advertising agency Akcelo was the other agency to make LinkedIn’s list, landing at 14th place, with 91 full-time employees, and the most common titles being ‘creative director’, ‘project manager’, and ‘director of account management’. Akcelo also has a venture arm specialising in pre-seed to Series A and B investments.

To compile the list, LinkedIn assessed the following criteria: employee growth; jobseeker interest; member engagement within the company and its employees; and how well these startups recruited from businesses in LinkedIn’s Top Companies list.

The list is emblematic of the new swathe of industries emerging. The top company on the list for the second year running is crypto-based web game development company Immutable. Also near the top is an AI-driven health company; a food biotech company that uses animal cells to grow meat-like products; a medical cannabis business; a micropayments company; and a pet-food start-up.

“Our latest list has shown that despite a turbulent market, Aussie startups are maintaining high levels of resilience, and it’s great to see so many new entrants in 2023,” said Cayla Dengate, career expert at LinkedIn Australia.

“This shows we have a robust local startup ecosystem that supports growth and innovation.

“For the second year in a row, Immutable has come in first place, showing the continued strength of the local business and its ongoing success.

“More broadly, we are seeing consistent growth across various industries, with strong representation on the list from climate technology, financial services, health/biotech and advertising businesses. It’s great to see that startups focused on sustainability and innovation are featured prominently on this year’s top startups list.”
