News appoints Damian Eales as group marketing director, replacing Corin Dimopoulos

Damian Eales 2News Corp Australia has announced the departure of group marketing director Corin Dimopoulos.

He will be replaced by former Westpac marketer Damian Eales who joined the company in February.

The departure of Dimopoulos is the first major leadership change since new CEO Julian Clarke took the reins at News a month ago.

“I’d like to thank Corin for all the great work he has done leading the company’s group marketing function,” said Julian Clarke in a statement.

“Corin has made a significant contribution to the company since he joined.  His achievements include overseeing the launch of news+ and driving outstanding digital take up, streamlining the marketing function, winning the Asia-Pacific’s highest industry accolade at the PANPA awards for our new brand campaign launches, and reducing the company’s overall marketing costs.”

Dimopoulos – who leaves tom orrow – joined the company in January last year from the UK where he was BSkyB’s director of marketing for Sky Sports and Sky News.

“It’s been great to lead the group marketing function at a time of such change in the industry – where increasingly customers are looking at new ways of engaging with our content and where News is developing new products to support great journalism,” said Dimopoulos.

Dimopoulos had joined the company amid high expectations. His lead with BSkyB’s investment in cycling saw Team Sky’s Bradley Wiggins become the first Briton to win the Tour de France in 2012. One high impact campaign rolled out by News Corp during his tenure were the “Fast front pages” billboards in Sydney  featuring that day’s cover of The Daily Telegraph.

Clarke said strategic partnership director Damian Eales would be the new group director of marketing.

“I am delighted that a person of Damian’s talent and experience has agreed to take on the role of group director marketing.  Damian has worked in senior marketing roles across a range of industries including as chief marketing officer at both David Jones and Westpac,” said Clarke.

“Damian will oversee our national marketing initiatives and also work closely with our business units to drive circulation and digital subscription revenue,”  he said.

Since the sudden departure of Kim Williams a month ago, there has been much industry speculation about the future of key appointees of the former News CEO.
