Dance Your Ass Off fails to rate its ass off
Nine’s ratings fell through the floor on Tuesday night with its programming experiment of making US reality contest Dance Your Ass Off the staple of the night falling flat.
The network pulled in less than 20% of the night’s share, according to preliminary TV ratings from OzTam.
The show – in which fat Americans compete to see who could lose the most weight by dancing – averaged just 797,000.
Meanwhile, Packed To The Rafters easily won the night for Seven. Talking Bout Your Generation performed well for Ten, but the second night of The 7PM Project fell back by a couple of hundred thousand viewers for the network.
Tuesday night’s share: Seven 32.5%; Ten 26.5%; Nine 19.9%; ABC 14.6%; SBS 6.5%.
Tuesday’s top rating TV shows:
- Packed to the Rafters Seven 1.9m
- Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation Ten 1.6m
- Seven News Seven 1.6m
- Air Ways Seven 1.6m
- Surf Patrol Seven 1.5m
- Today Tonight Seven 1.4m
- Home and Away Seven 1.3m
- A Current Affair Nine 1.3m
- Nine News Nine 1.3m
- All Saints Seven 1.2m
- Two and a Half Men 7pm Nine 1.2m
- NCIS 8.30pm Ten 1.2m
- The7PM Project Ten 1.1m
- NCIS 9.30pm Ten 1m
- Grand Designs ABC 1m
Yeah that was disappointing.
Has anyone seen Randy Jackson presents America’s next best dance crew? Now that is gonna go off when it comes to our free to air.

It was the disgusting looking viewing I’ve seen in a while

Gasp, did anyone think that it would have been any good. If Nine is trying to “cash in” on dancing style shows, getting this US trash certainly was a failed experiement.
The only thing I will say about the show in a postitive, if the contestants were happy enough to jiggle about in bad costumes (and try to lose weight) then kudos to them …I don’t think any Australian’s would go through that…maybe I’ll send a memo to Network Ten and get them to change The Biggest Loser format to the “The Biggest Dancer is not a Loser on the Dancefloor”

I love the concept – but please make it a new gym class, behind closed doors…. If it must appear on our TV’s then perhaps replace Aerobic Oz Style with DYAO in the mornings!! Now there’s an idea…..

Any one see the promo clip played prior to show, were an anti missle tanker..ehem I mean an extremely over weight contestant managed to pull off the spilts..thats one way to turning viewers off watching..good work Nine!

Well personally I think 9 have missed a trick. At one point during the show it was within the top trending topics on Twitter, and it even got facetime on Facebook. The broader TV audience may not be interested but clearly the twitterati want to see fatty boom bahs shake their thang on a Tuesday evening.

America’s best dance crew can be seen on MTV on Foxtel.

I’ll be giving that a “wide berth” I think…I think most of the dancing shows have had their day…how long can you milk a concept before it gets tiresome?

@ CK Cash…just ask the producers of the Big Brother series…took the ignorant Australian public 7 years to realise what a complete waste of time that was.

It was like watching a car crash, I couldn’t look away. Not necessarily the reaction 9 would have wanted, I’m sure….

Plus that hideous hostess with the American beauty pageant fake smile was truly, well, hideous. Couldn’t have been more cheesy if it came from Bega.

You can’t just put two formats (The Biggest Loser and So You Think You Can Dancee) together and expect a hybrid success. Some things weren’t meant to breed.
From the sublime in MasterChef, to the ridiculous in DYAO.
It averaged less than 800,000 last night – I give it 3 weeks before it goes digital. Twitter today gone tomorrow?

Don’t forget to add the following hit list:
The 7pm Project (could have had major potential but didn’t)
The upcoming season of Aus Idol (they are cutting it back to 1 show a week)
All Saints (oh wait, it’s going anyway)
Rush (very average)
Beauty and the Geek (already on Foxtel and it’s crap so don’t make an Aussie version)
Out of the Blue (it’s Home and Away with murder)
Rules of Engagement
…and the list goes on…
So glad that TV1, 111 Hits and others are putting on good shows as it seems the “classics” are still worth watching

Castings for the Oz version of beauty & the geek have already been staged across the capital citites inc Adelaide today and Melb on Saturday – so strap your self in for another mindless american rip off to hit our shores.
Theres that much ignorance within the free 2 air audience that 7 can smell it…

I for one really liked it…its a completly new concept and everyone that I have spoken to in the last few days watched it in awe – Definitely discussion around the water fountain at work if you hear what I am saying.
I am sure it is more to do with some politically correct board saying that you cant have that on the TV and more that one fatty having their 2 cents in the matter
Perhaps if they took a leaf out of the contestants book and shake their “thang” instead of reaching for that third krispy kreme the show would still be on!

It’s great that DYAO has a fan in Catherine and a few others. Good luck to them and I hear what you’re saying.
But to look at the facts, DYAO is an awkward hybrid – a derivative of two established (and successful) formats. Hopefully the water cooler talk reflected this and I think that the public certainly saw it.
I also think that the decision makers will have looked at the facts – ratings under 800,000 and some very damning reviews. In the words of the Sydney Morning Herald; “This is a frighteningly garish production full of shrill, inarticulate Americans”.
Best to cut and run.

Had to laff when I read the wikipedia article about DYAO

Oh, I came across this new “dating” show similar to the Batchelor/Batchelorette called More to Love airing on Fox US from next week (I think it will make it to Foxtel/Arena at some stage)
More To Love follows a single man trying to find love among twenty plus size women.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_to_Love
I don’t mind this concept ONLY because it involves an “larger” guy looking for “love” with plus sized women..instead of the model type people they normally use.

fat guys looking searching for fat chicks…i cant imagine finding a desperate fat chick is that hard these days..
Not enough to justify making another potential flop reality show.
And for all those who will complain about me being crude re fat people, its the harsh truth, so deal with it.

On the same night Australians reject “DYAO” on Nine they rate “PTTR” Number 1. What was it they once said abut Aussies “we’re a weird mob”

I’m no fan of Packed to the Rafters but I always think it’s amusing that one of the high rating Australian made dramas has both main characters who are kiwi actors.
