The announcement:

December 19, 2011: Fairfax Media’s Metro Media CEO, Jack Matthews, today announced the permanent appointment of David Hoath as Chief Executive and Publisher, Melbourne Publishing, which includes The Age and Fairfax Community Network’s suite of 32 titles known as the Weekly.

Mr Matthews said: “David has been Acting Chief Executive and Publisher since early September while the company searched for the best candidate. The position is a pivotal one for The Age and FCN Victoria, so it was necessary to cast a wide net to ensure we identified the best person for the job.

“It’s been reassuring to have found that David was the best candidate. He has a deep understanding of the commercial realities of the business, and is also a great “people” person. He has guided Melbourne Publishing through a tough four months of transition and trade already, and will continue to lead the division competently and confidently.”

Mr Hoath has been with Fairfax for more than six years in various sales, marketing and operations roles.

“The Age and FCN Victoria have a strong connection with the Melbourne community, and my hope is that I and everyone in Melbourne Publishing can keep strengthening that connection,” Mr Hoath said.

“I believe that Fairfax Media is a truly great media company. I am proud of the critical role that it plays in providing informed and independent news, analysis, commentary and services to its readers, listeners and online and mobile subscribers. Now I feel that we’re at the dawn of an even greater period in the company’s history, and I’m thrilled to be part of it.”

Mr Matthews said: “The position of Chief Executive and Publisher is a critical one for The Age and FCN Victoria as we move forward with implementing the strategic changes required to grow our business. I’m very grateful that David is filling this vital role.”
