DDB Sydney group managing director Kieren Cooney is moving across to Interbrand Worldwide to take on the CEO role left vacant by Damian Borchok who departed at the end of last year to found The People Agency.

Cooney takes on the role after just nine months with DDB. Previously he was the chief marketing officer of NBN Co for nearly three years, the CMO of Telecom New Zealand for a year and a half  and the director of mobile for the same organisation for two months.

He has also been the CEO of Leading Edge Group for four years and was the general manager of Vodafone for four years.

On the appointment Interbrand and DDB Group Australia and NZ chairman Marty O’Halloran said in a statement: “Mid last year Kieren joined DDB as our Group Managing Director in Sydney.  During this time his people leadership, business acumen and customer focus have been invaluable to all levels of the business. As a transformational leader, he has made a huge impact not least within our Telstra business. Very quickly we realised who would be best suited to take Interbrand to the next level in Australia.

“With 20 years experience working at the forefront of some of the region’s most dynamic organisations as a highly successful business leader, Kieren is the perfect fit for Interbrand. He is a formidable leader and his experience and passion for brand, strategy and innovation will unquestionably lead Interbrand into a period of renewed growth. Kieren will play a key role in the broader DDB Group Executive leadership team and continue to lead the Telstra business.”

Cooney said: “Interbrand has a deservedly impressive reputation across the Globe as the world’s leading strategic brand consultancy with some of the most innovative work being led out of Australia. I’m very excited to be joining Interbrand at a moment in time when what we do has never been more relevant or valuable.”

Cooney will commence his new role effective immediately.
