Deepend unveils ‘Day by Day’ app to help early childhood education

Digital agency Deepend has created an app to help families living in underprivileged circumstances learn more about early childhood development.

‘Day by Day’ asks users to create a profile by designing what you look like including your skin tone, hair style, shirt colour and your pant or skirt colour before asking questions about the child’s gender, age and appearance.

The app then asks parents to complete a series of activities including reciting what their child says back to them and making up a “silly song or rhyme about getting out of bed”.

“Here’s your nose, there’s your toes, now it’s time to change your _____,” the app asks parents to select the rhyming word out of three options: rose, clothes and crows.

The app was developed in collaboration with children’s rights charity Save the Children and is available on Andriod and iOS devices for free.

Kath Blackham, managing director of Deepend Melbourne, said in a statement: “The challenge was clear – to reach parents and make it easy for them to help their kids learn and grow.

“To do this, we harnessed the idea of playtime in an everyday setting – a house – and created a series of activities to encourage incremental changes in daily interactions between parents and young children.

“Play allows children to develop their imagination and dexterity along with their physical, cognitive, and emotional health, while the app allowed us to facilitate these  earning experiences where and when they are needed most.”

Alex Sampson, media manager at Save the Children, said the app “creates healthy habits” and rewards parents for completing small goals.

“Day by Day creates healthy habits and attitudes by rewarding players for completion of small goals, brings families closer as kids learn new things, and together they share accomplishments.”
