Direct Group acquires Reader’s Digest business in Australia and New Zealand

Multi-channel direct marketing and media company Direct Group has acquired the Reader’s Digest business in Australia and New Zealand.

Reader’s Digest has been operating in Australia and NZ for over 70 years and publishes and distributes the Reader’s Digest and Handyman magazines and also has a business marketing books, CDs, DVDs and other home entertainment products, along with vitamins, insurance and general merchandise.

The acquisition was completed at the end of last year and has seen the MD of the business in Asia Pacific, Walter Beyleveldt become the GM of Direct Publishing with responsibility for publishing Reader’s Digest and Handyman magazines in Australia and New Zealand.

Chris Eade, CEO of Direct Group, said in a statement: “We look forward to working with the Reader’s Digest team as we explore the many opportunities that Reader’s Digest will bring to Direct Group, and vice versa.

“This is an extremely exciting development for the group and is strategically important as we work to unlock the opportunities and leverage the collective strength of our brands. Reader’s Digest has a similar customer profile to Direct Group and this demographic is forecast to increase in size by approximately 50% over the next 10-12 years.”

Direct Group brands include TVSN, Expo, Innovations, Entertainment Masters, Damart, Victoria Hill, The Fox Collection, Gaiam and Infofashion.
