DMCI to feature at TEDx Sydney

The DMC Initiative will be appearing at this weekend’s TEDx Sydney event.

The announcement:

Multi-award winning design and director collective, The DMC Initiative (DMCI) has been chosen to participate at annual ideas festival TEDxSydney, which will be held at Sydney Opera House (May 4th). This year, the acclaimed organisation has enlisted DMCI to create Tasty Video Bits (TVBs) that will provide attendees with sorbet refreshers in between talks with the aim of getting people thinking.

About two dozen creative agencies and some student bodies submitted concepts to TEDxSydney. Curators then narrowed the selection down to fourteen entries that would form part of the 2013 program.

The mandate for the TVB’s was to create palette cleansers during what is a day of thought provoking talks. Agencies were instructed to ‘Think different, think fun, think TED’ and aim to delight, inspire and amuse. The goal was to blow the audience away with creativity, smarts and passion.

“The TVB’s are the little cones of sorbet that wake us up. We were looking for delightful, brilliant moments to share at TEDxSydney that were original, smart, refreshing and inspiring. What I liked about DMCI’s was that it grew from a simple idea about shapes and creation into a seamless, animated world but still retained the simplicity of the original concept,” said Marque Owen Head of Video Content at TEDxSydney, who also acted as Executive Producer on the project.

Already known for its strengths in motion design and directing, DMCI’s short film FUTURE PROOF had been selected as a showcase piece throughout festivals and events around the world. In 2012 it featured at London’s Innovation for Creative and Cultural Industries Olympic Showcase (ICCI) as well as the reputable European digital arts festivals Circuito OFF and Ars Electronica. The agency‘s reputation in the industry is growing at a rapid pace, having worked with brands such as Foxtel, CBS, Nickelodeon, Disney, MTV, Westfield and McCann-Erickson.

DMCI Managing Director, Paul Meredith notes, “We are honoured and delighted to be part of such a respected conference and excited to contribute to TEDx’s propagation of ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’.”

DMCI have created a two minute, fully animated graphic design piece which ebbs and flows through a journey reflective of the seasons. The concept focuses on cycles of growth and is explored via an abstract journey that loosely parallels the ‘seasons’ of life.

DMCI Creative Director, Nathan Drabsch adds, “At the heart of all our projects is storytelling through beautiful aesthetics. The aim of this piece is for people to feel they have gone on a personal and reflective journey. It’s subjective, but we quite like that given the context of being a part of a wonderful forum like TEDx.”

DMCI’s TVB will be played through a live feed around the Opera House precinct, satellite events around Australia, on the ABC and the internet via YouTube live. After May 4 the TVB will also be available on www.thedmci.com.au
