Hacksaw Ridge beats The Accountant but can’t match Doctor Strange at the box office

New Mel Gibson war biopic Hacksaw Ridge could not compete with Disney’s Doctor Strange at the box office over the weekend, securing $1.609m on its opening days.

The film, which stars Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington and was shot throughout NSW, managed to outstrip new Ben Affleck film The Accountant, which managed $1.572m on its opening days.

Neither could match the pulling power, or marketing budget, of Disney’s Doctor Strange, which took $3.706m on its second weekend to push its earnings to $12.328m, so far.

Another Australian-centred film, The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender, which tells the story of a lighthouse keeper in remote WA, managed $655,709 on its first weekend to find fifth place in the charts.
