Domain expands into business journalism, appointing News Corp’s Chris Kohler as national business editor
Fairfax’s real estate portal and content arm Domain has made a move into business journalism, appointing editor of The Australian’s business blog BusinessNow, Chris Kohler, to the newly created role of business editor.
Kohler’s role will include covering the national banking sector, financial markets, consumer affairs and personal finance, skewed to a real estate perspective, which Domain says will further help Australians make sense of property markets.
Domain’s chief editorial and marketing officer Melina Cruickshank said with Domain’s audience growing, Kohler would add to the national conversation.
“I’m really pleased Chris is joining our team of trusted and respected journalists. He will add a fresh new voice to Australia’s property conversation,” she said.
“With the Australian economy relying heavily on the health of its property markets, property is a subject that creates significant debate at a local, state and federal level. With so much information and change, Domain remains focused on helping Australians make sense of complicated market forces that impact their decisions.
“Domain has grown audiences to over 5.2m [monthly audience of Domain Group digital and print (includes Domain, Allhomes and The Weekly Review). Sourced via emma conducted by Ipsos MediaCT, People 14+, for the 12 months ending Mar 2017, Nielsen Digital Ratings Monthly, Mar 2017] across print and digital mediums, and now reaches over 1.3m via their various social media platforms. Chris specifically will be focused on tapping into our social media channels via long-form stories and video.”
Kohler said: “Domain has become a trusted powerhouse in the flow of property information. I look forward to joining Domain’s editorial team, recruiting new writers and contributing my knowledge to help the brand forge new ground in business journalism.”
Kohler is the son of Alan Kohler, former editor of The Australian Financial Review and The Age. Alan Kohler launched The Eureka Report and Business Spectator before selling them to News Corp in 2012. Last year, Alan Kohler launched investment news website The Constant Investor.
Let’s get this right. Domain is an advertising brand, operating web sites and branding newspaper pages for advertising inventory. Domain sits on well established news brands (SMH, Age, AFR) which have had their editorial budgets carved back heavily.
Can we assume that Catalano is now at war with Hywood or is this just a sign of idiocy/hubris?

What a strategy! First you sack hundreds of reporters. Then you turn your whole news media business into a property portal propped up by estate agent shareholders, with the novel addition of newspapers to the digital mix. You float a minority stake to create the idea of separation. Then you start tipping editorial staff into the property “portal”. Genius.
I wonder if TPG and Brian Powers noticed?

What is the relevance of who his father is?

Hi FFS,
It is relevant as his father is a well-known journalist in a similar field. Chris Kohler also spent time working at The Eureka Report and Business Spectator.
His family tree is interesting, but LESS relevant than his own career history and developments, which is why the mention of his father appears at the bottom of the story, not at the top.
If Tony Abbott’s daughter were to enter parliament, I expect we would mention her relation to the former prime minister.
Thanks for reading to the end,
