Downton and Newton lead the charge in Sunday’s ratings

Seven narrowly beat Nine to top show of the evening on Sunday night with three programs pulling in audiences of 1.2m.

Seven News (1.231m) and Downton Abbey (1.216m) came in narrowly ahead of Nine’s 60 Minutes (1.214m), which included an interview with the troubled star Matthew Newton.

Meanwhile, Nine’s The Block: All Stars was seventh for the night with average audience of 1.119m, according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTAM.

Ten saw a slightly more competitive start to the week with Elementary making it into in the top ten for all people, tenth for the night with an audience of 899,000. Masterchef: The Professionals rated 859,000. The two shows were third and fourth in Ten’s key demographics of 16-39 and 18-49.

Meanwhile short film festival Tropfest, being aired for the first time on SBS1, averaged a relatively disappointing 181,000, making it 50th for the night.
